TV recaps, Entertainment, & Pop Culture
*This is it. It's the episode of "This Is Us" we've been waiting for since it premiered last September. It's the episode where Jack dies in the fire... or so we thought.
It has been built up forever; first with the burnt house, then the smoke alarm without batteries, and last week's episode where the sad song plays as Crockpot betrays us all and sets the Pearson home into flames.
We were all ready for the emotional turmoil the episode was going to put us through within the first few minutes because we all assumed that we knew how it went down. Jack gets everyone out safely and Kate makes him go back in for the dog and he dies.
*I was ready for all my emotional upheaval until the Superbowl ran over but I was very happy that the Eagles won.
The first few minutes went like that, until we heard the dog bark and Jack comes out. He's in the ambulance, with 2 degree burns and oxygen to help him breath, but our guy Jack looks just fine.
We know better than that though... we know he dies, we know he dies tonight.
Do I even bother recapping the adult parts of the show? We really only care about Jack and the young Big 3 tonight.
Jack ends up in the emergency room and the doctor checks him out; all is well. He refuses pain medication because ya know, the addiction thing. *I'm writing this in real time and my heart is just beating out of my chest.
As Rebecca is on the phone, making arrangements and talking to Miguel to give them updates, we see a nurse in the background and hear a faint beeping in the background but Rebecca can't see. I, however, notice these things because it's This Is Us and we're patiently waiting for Jack to die.
The doctor finds her and gently breaks the news that her husband died of a heart attack. This is much more anti climatic than him dying in the fire. Rebecca doesn't believe that he's dead, goes into his hospital room and sees it for herself.
At this point, I'm not even crying... I'm just broken inside and I'm annoyed that they made us wait for this hospital death.
Rebecca goes to Miguel's house to get the kids, her eyes red with tears and she tells him that his best friend just died. He starts to blubber and she says that she has to be strong because she's about to ruin her kids' lives and that just broke me in so many ways.
We don't even hear her say the words, we just see their reactions and my God, it is killing me *like I said, I'm writing this as I watch it in real time*. It's just very painful as someone who has lost their dad, to watch this.
Kate runs to find Kevin who probably just lost his virginity to Sophie in the backseat of a car; we see Rebecca go to their burnt down house and slam the steering wheel, just like we saw a few episodes back. Or was it last season? I can't remember...
I said I wasn't going to recap the Big 3 adults but it's very important to tell you that the producers threw us for a loop. They made us believe that Randall was getting another foster child but it turned out that we were in the future, Tess was the social worker who found a foster family for an adorable little boy... and Deja came back to Randall's house.
How do they do they keep doing this to us?
Until Tuesday.... see ya at the funeral which is going to rip our hearts out.
